I have had this Chinese Juniper for almost a year - and not managed to kill it off yet!!!

I am now trying to grow a shrub as a bonsai - but don't know what to do to stop it growing taller. I have had it in a pot since last autumn.
I am sure you don't nip the tops out.
I have tried doing a search for information - without luck, so far.

Hi Emm I used to have about 20 Bonsai, then we moved to the UK!

Keep it pruned, and the roots as well if you can, though I once did a workshop that took mature bushes and we hacked em about to produce some lovely looking bonsai, they all seemed to survive!

You can start wiring it now if you want to, won't hurt the plant so long as you keep an eye on the wires and don't let them cut into the branches.

I have 2 plants in pots that I do nothing to that I keep saying, when I get the time I will bonsai them.........they are still growing!

Get yourself a good bonsai book, the library might be a good place to start.

I found it hard in the UK to find bonsai supplies, but with the advent of them being sold in every shopping center I am sure it is easier now.

Enjoy the hobby, it is very relaxing, albeit  eventually obsessive & time consuming!  DP

They look very nice but im too impatient to wait the years and years that they take to grow.
I have heard that you prune the roots with a fork- rake them kinda
I LOVE OP AMPS!

I think I'm in the process of killing mine! The destructions said do not prune over winter, so I didn't. Then in spring had to hack off loads of growth. It's now looking a bit stick-like. oops. new growth is occuring, so fingerscrossed.
gone to pot :D

Some Do's and Dont's for Bonsai
I never keep Bonsai in the house even the so called indoor bonsai but Ido put them in a cold greenhouse over winter.
Only root prune in early spring usually March or April.
Plants like Junipers should be pinched continually through the growing season.

Thanks everyone.
I have only just found a site - the man on there, said he takes between 10 to 20 years to get a trunk as he wants it!!!!!!

Er - don't think I'll bother.
::)

My Juniper is only brought indoors when frost is forecast - although the forecasters got it wrong a couple of times, and fortunately the tree didn't come to any harm.
When I bought the tree last year, I was given a book with it - Bonsai, their care.
But that is only basic information.

I have got my finers crossed for you, aquilegia.
