Another Garlic/Onion Question
« on: July 08, 2005, 13:06:54 »
Thanks to all the advise taken from this site I have now lifted 20+ Garlic bulb and 30+ Onions.

The question is how do I know when these are dry enough the plat and how do I clean them up.

When I did my first harvest of garlic I left the bulbs (with leaves) on the bench for a few days (as it was very sunny). I then peeled off the outer layer of skin when they went papery and plaited them.

Second lot harvested this week are on a tray in the shed because it keeps drizzling.
gone to pot :D

I dont plat mine, too lazy for that. I just store them in onion bags.

Once I lift the onions I lay them on a piece of chicken wire that is raised of the ground until the tops dry and crumble. (I dont leave them on the ground if it is even slightly damp).

Then I simply remove any of the soiled skins and pop in the sacks to store.

Thanks as usual for the replies.

I lifted my garlic and dried it on the wall for a couple of days in the bright sunshine - then when the weather looked a bit iffy, I tied it into loose bunches of five and hung it under the parasol over the garden furniture for a week or so.

Last night I twisted off the dried soil and outer skin and plaited the bulbs together.  I then woke Mrs Wivvles up (she'd gone to bed early) to show her my handiwork!!!! ;D

Hi Wivvles

Did much the same when I brought mine home form the plot.
How can they be so unimpressed and ungrateful with such wonderful produce, just because they were asleep.
