Wood chips: Any use?
« on: April 27, 2005, 19:43:52 »
Neighbour has felled and chipped his trees via a monster gobbling up m/c. Has anyone tried this stuff as mulch?

No - but. since you couldn't incorporate it into the soil - at least until well rotted -  I would say 'don't'.
Great as a pathway or weed supressant around permanent things like roses.

My advice is only use after composting for at least a year. Then only use around shrubs and trees. Will impoverish soil if used fresh (carbon:nitrogen ratio v.high)

My gardening teacher said 18 months  :)   It's great for paths round the lotty as it's nice and soft to walk on.  If it's small enough you could add it to the compost bin
I came, I saw, I composted

I did wonder about it leaching baddies into the soil until it's been stacked awhile. Think I'll pass on it.

I'm sure that wood chip also can attract unsavory characters

A friend is someone who thinks you are a good egg,
even though you are slightly cracked.

I'll let you know as I have it and it looks and feels good, I don't think it will hoard woodlice as the traffic will deter them and they prefer a quiet well rotted compost bins so as to chomp on dead leaves etc: :o 8)
