I have just harvested my first crop of Hinnomaki Red Gooseberries. They are more a reddy-black and have an unusual taste more like blackcurrants than gooseberries .
Anyone grown them before? Are they meant to taste like that when ripe?

Well I got it from a garden centre and the label said  Hinnomaki Red. Checked it a few days ago as I keep labels.
Bought a Hinnomaki Green as well and that taste like a traditional gooseberry

If it is a mislabelled jostaberry, the fruit should have turned blackish by now, and the whole bush would eventually get rather larger than a gooseberry bush, going by my experience of jostaberry.

Looked a bit more and they say they taste rather like a tangy grape. That's about right as to what they taste to me   Certainly not like a conventional gooseberry
Decided to make some jam out if them. Let you know what it tastes like!

Some feedback!
The jam was lovely so if one doesn't like the taste as a dessert gooseberry they should be brilliant if using in cooking.
