looking for a name for a cucumber?
« on: January 30, 2011, 15:26:31 »
Does any of you remember a 'cucumber' seeds that was sold 'few' years ago. The fruit is pale green and skin has sort of 'furry' feeling like peach skin. Plants and the fruit looked more like melon than cucumber. They fruit wasn't as 'watery' as cucumber but had delicous cucumber/melon flavour. The fruit didn't grow large..4-6" long more oblong than round. The skin was spine free and I did used to peel it off. The flesh was very pale green too almost same colour as skin.
I can't remember if it was melon that was sold to be eaten and tasting like cucumber or cucumber that was more like melon ::)
Now that it I all of the sudden remembered that, I really really want to grow it again ::) ;D
If I could just get the name..then it would be easier to buy the seeds again..if it is still around..fingers crossed ???

Ummm...just googled it..thanks but not its not pepino..
plants are definately climbers..like melons or cucumber not bush like.
And the fruit is similar to chrystal lemon cucumber but with peachy skin.
I've been looking around web..and there seem to be several 'cucumber-melons' about..but none of them have yet looked like the one I grew.
I think it was T&M that sold the seeds..that would be..umm..maybe 10yrs ago :o ::)...uhhh...time fly :-[

I've got Carosello Mezzo Lungo to try this year, 'which is furry' Is it similar to the one you are looking for?

Was it 'Carosello Tondo Liscio' or Armenian Cucumber. Both Melon x Cucumber Cross?

Jayb..I found this page after you mention the name that you are growing and indeed it looks more like I used to grow ;D ::)
Code: [Select]
http://www.gardenedibles.com/products/cucumber-half-long-from-polignanoI don't know how similar or different it is than Carosello Tondo Liscio, but I ordered those already...maybe we should do some seedsaving from both varieties and put it into distribution and trial which is better? Any interest?

I grew Crystal Apple from Fothergills in 2001 so the date's right. As I remember it was round and yellowish/green, don't know if it was furry though. (Sorry, nerdy type who keeps records of pretty much everything they've ever grown).

I'm sure my melon/cucumber is either Carosello Mezzo Lungo or Tondo Liscio.
Chrystal Apple was just my way of describing the look of the fruit. But now that I've seen some options I'm starting 'lean' towards Jayb's  Tondo..well..we will see..I'm just trying to find where to buy some Tondo now..I'm never satisfied unless I've all options 'covered' ;D
I'm not going start going bonkers over cucumbers now..I'll promise :-X
I wonder if saving seeds from these hybrid fruits is just as straight forward job..like with 'normal' cucumbers?

I'll check how many I have left (already shared some) and may not have enough to share further at the moment. I'll try saving seed later on, as far as I'm aware the variety I'm growing is actually a melon.

I'm not sure if you have a cross but the Tondo Liscio I've seen listed are all 'C. melo L. var. chate', so another melon

I think I may have another similar type somewhere, I'll have a look through in the next day or so.

Not grown these yet, but as you say, they cross with melons.  Here is another one of the same type:  Carosello Barese

Seeds of Italy sell another: Melone of Manduria and two more

I am fairly sure that RealSeeds sold a 'carosello' cucumber a few years ago too.
