Topic: Butternut squash seeds

I have one butternut squash plant which did really well, producing several huge squash. The other one (from another shop) had none.

I'd like to save the seeds from the productive one, but will they have been cross-pollinated by Burgess Buttercup squash plants nearby? Or by the unproductive butternut plant? 

If its worth trying then how do I save the seeds? Do you just scrape them out and let them dry?

Squash are the skanky tramps of the plant world... one of my pumpkins was set as a result of pollinating with a gherkin!... Unless you're only growing one variety and none of your neighbours are growing cucurbits of any kind I wouldn't trust them to come  true to variety... squash generally aren't particularly self fertile either so I wouldn't bother.....
