How can I harvest my own runner beans?
« on: October 01, 2009, 14:02:43 »
I grew scarlett emperor this year very successfully.  For the last month I deliberately didn't pick anymore because I heard that you can harvest your own beans from the pods once they have gone brown and dry and obviously left on the plant.  Is this true?  And if so, what do I do with the pods then?
I'd appreciate any advice.

For next years seeds you mean ?

If so let dry out ,pod them and keep in a cook place frost free till next spring
chuck empty pods on compost heap
i don't belive death is the end

I've always been (get it ) told to select long straight pods and when podded choose the fattest beans.I always pod mine and store in a brown paper bag but a friend just throws the pods on a shelf in his shed. One thing make sure pods are completely dry -on the plant- before picking. Now all you've got to decide is what type of new seed to buy with the money you've saved  ;D

If you shell them out before they are dry and put in the freezer you can add them to casseroles..  :)

Well that makes me feel a bit better now.  I have heaps of beans which are too far gone to pick and cook - they would be rather stringy.  But now I know I use the beans in casseroles or dry them and plant next year.......   ;D ;D ;D

Runners cross breed so there will be some variation in your saved seeds... but they will still be runner beans..  :)
