You have to make sure that the avatar is the right size though.  Must not be more than 100 x 100 - just right click on the one you like - go to 'properties' and a box will come up which will show you the size of the avatar - if it is 100 x 100 or less then you can copy the URL and paste into your profile.  Hope this helps.
