In old money I work on about 6 to the pound so I guess that must be around13/14 to the kilo so say 40 to a 3 kilo bag.

Obviously big/small seed will alter the numbers slightly.

But six to the pound I find is a good average!

been into wilko in Ely and there are lots of empty shelves in the gardening area so i guess they have not had the onion and spuds in yet. I am hoping to get to the east of england potato day on the 14th though and will probably get my spuds there.

Thanks,oc. With places like T&M asking 3.99 for 20 tubers, I'll definitely be going back to Wilko. :D

I've ordered mine from the growers, for delivery this month, might try to get them to delay until next month.

Drat, drat, drat.  That is a good price for seed spuds.  I ordered mine at the allotment shed as I was on shed duty that day and the secretary was saying that no one had ordered any potatoes.  I felt so guilty that I ordered 3 types at £15+ (I think that was the price) per 3 kilo bag.

I think you've got that wrong, unless your secretary is on the fiddle! ;D

No spuds at tamworth branch yet, Think our allotment shop gets them in towards end of this week  around £2.80 for 3kg.

My fault I STILL try to buy from small independent shops as I don't want the large conglomerates  to control all our foodstuffs and othr purchases.  Trouble is I think I have far too many spuds for the space - how should I grow the rest.  I have heard about growing in bins, bags & tubs but have been told that grow bag contents are best - but growbags are so expensive.  Would it be all right to grow them in bins, bags & rubs in ordinary soil.

Lottie lou, £15 for a 3kg bag is daylight robbery.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

As for growing in containers, I had extra seeds this year so put 4 in an inside out 75L compost bag (pierced with holes) and filled with sieved soil.  I put a few inches of soil in the bottom, then the spuds and covered them with a few inches.  When they started to shoot, I topped them up to cover up to the top few leaves and kept going until the bag was full.  I did the same with another compost bag inside an old incinerator bin.  The container potatoes were better than those in the ground - less sluggy and scabby, but maybe slightly lower yield.  You need to watch the watering and make sure they don't dry out.
