In order to discourage the proliferation of odd-shaped vegetables now that the restrictions  have been relaxed,  DEFRA has announced that HM Government has instructed them to explore ways to tax vegetables that do not conform to the previous rules.
The new tax is expected to be in place by 1st April 2009.

I hope that by leaking this information that I am not raided by the anti-terrorist unit.

yeah - best not to get too hot under the collar about anything reported by the daily mail. Not the most impartial of sources! All tabloids have been known to publish hearsay as fact ...

Pigeonseed has things in perspective. there are all sorts of tales about EU rulings that the DM newspaper and also the DT take and twist so much that their readers are led into dead ends.

I start from the premise that all Journalists and Politicians are liars. You won't go far wrong then.

If that is to back up your earlier post (about a typical Daily Fascist article that I read online ages ago) then check what it says at the end of the headline - in fact I will quote it:

Come on! If we're going to quote things, please keep it objective! The Daily Mail is not a source of news, it is a source of panic, fear & hatred. The other thing's quite frankly bizarre...

In actual fact im a gardener and i earned just £12,000 last year so im FAR from worring about them bringing in the higher bracket tax.

And lets be honest this government have a fantastic track record of introducing stealth taxes, and have made far bigger mistakes, its hardly a Daily Mail thing is it, just look around you......if i was to say they were totally imcompetent in 99.9% of things they have done in the past 11 years it would be the understatement of all time.

Wot, calling people communists, barely disguised swearing, disparaging remarks about someone's nationality - all placed on the most visited board (Edible Plants) for the maximum attention instead of on the News board or better yet in the Watershed?

"There are around 2553 sites in the UK which are currently registered as composting biodegradable waste.
Under the rule changes, 1685 - or 66 per cent of these - will in future require a permit at a cost of £600 each. The remainder will have to pay the £50 charge to register every three years."
Taken from the Daily Mail article.

So these are registered waste disposal sites under the current regulations which are pretty stringent. Exactly how many schools and charities with a normal compost heap are registered? Hear a pin drop? None?? Are these then the council sites that compost home waste, or the commercial sites such as Sita and Biffa?  I think so. They are businesses and have to register.

There is no information that the registration scheme is extending to compost heaps in general, so you, I, schools and charities aren't affected.

God I love the Daily Mail who currently seem to be competing with the jouranlistic standards of The Sunday Sport.

I also agree that this thread should have been in The Shed, News or Watershed. No politics in  Edibles please.  :-\
