Planting out sweetcorn (quite urgent !!)
« on: June 03, 2007, 09:44:31 »
I am planting mine out today after a couple of weeks hardening off and greenhouse at night.

They are looking MUCH bigger and stronger already, altho a few have died off.

My plot neighbour has made what looks like a windbreak about 1.5m sq for his with stakes and really thick netting, but not covered the corn?

Is this the done thing? I have some stuff to make a windbreak with, so I not need to protect the corn from the birds?

Many thanks

Personally I have never had the pigeons eat my corn, they get all the brassicas if they can. It might be that the grassy foliage is a bit hard compared to the soft growth of a  brassica seedling. The slugs will have a go at them though.

No-one ever covers it here.

Others may have different advice though.
When God blesses you with a multitude of seeds double  the blessing by sharing your  seeds with other folks.

Thanks all  :)

Luckily the site was quite busy and it was 50:50 as to whether to protect. I think I shall leave them for now as I have made the windbreak or sorts, until they are a bit more established, altho my neighbouring plotholders were admiring how well they have come on at home - I was SO proud  8) they are old timers, 3 men on each side of me running a plot the size of mine, so I got lots of encouragement and advice  :)

Been back tonight to water them in and plot out for my peas/beans, sow some more carrots and peas and its looking more like an allotment now finally!! Also got masses of cardboard as my brother is fitting some kitchens at the moment so got loads of the weed covered!

Fingers crossed! Its worse than having babies!!!

I have grown sweet corn for several years in Glasgow. Put my first lot out yesterday, but I do give them wind protection for the first month or so. Cold, strong east winds can trash them. Luckily, the squirrels have not learnt to eat my sweetcorn.

Thanks real food, I think altho its very sheltered there, you are right, the plot is only about half a mile from the seafront and the north sea winds!

I planted out  30 sweetcorn plants today, had OH sitting cutting pop bottles in half to make plastic shields which I put around the bottom of each plant.

This deters the slimies plus gives them a bit of protection, and I keep them on all season as it makes giving them a drink really easy if they need one.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Mine all out this weekend, Minipop and Applause, mulched up with straw, but no other protection. (they seemed to do ok last year)
Smile, it confuses people.

I've lost sweetcorn in their entirety to deer.

I have moved house and deer are still an issue.

I use a three sisters bed with craters instead of humps, I plant the squash in the crater walls and the beans and corn in the crater bottom. Great when water is short.

Planted mine out last week (incredible f1).
They've gone into sunny border in garden, only 9, planted in a block.
Dwarf french beans planted in between.

Approx how many will I get from 4 cobs?

Debs :P
