Young little sprouts
« on: April 02, 2007, 08:45:16 »
I'm really proud of my little sprout seedlings, they are doing well in the cold frame outside, and I gave the tray a 'slug check' last night and found that most of them are breaking out lots of roots through the paper -

Is it time to plant out?  Under a cloche?
If so should they go in with some feed?

I've also got a tray of Broccoletto - also doing well, but no signs of roots...

Hmmm...

Bit early for Sprouts - by the book - but if they're good strong plants & have been hardened off, then plant! Shouldn't need cover.

Balanced fertiliser first, make sure the ground is really firm & plant deep!

This year I'm going to put them in a trench so that I can earth up for support.

My mate does a variation on this Tim.

He digs a hole (depression if you like) and plants his brassicas in the bottom of this then covers them with fleece this gets them off to a good start and the fleece (even when wet) doesn't seem to damage them, possibly because it is hovering over them rather than resting on them.

The when he removes the fleece he rakes the soil around the plants to support them
