Brussels sprouts - still time to start?
« on: April 26, 2006, 20:00:09 »
Hi all,
I am not having great luck with starting sprouts this year. I usually sow them in root-trainers. My first set must have got damping-off disease or something as the seedlings died soon after they came up.
I started another set mid April.  These came up fine. However, when I went down to my allotment this evening I found that the plastic cold-frame that they were in, along with a tray and root-trainers containing the sprouts was gone.  While I see that someone might take a cold frame, but a tray of seedlings....

Well....back to my main question. Is there still time to sow another set this weekend? I considered that it might be getting late.

Thanks,
Thomas

I have some in my unheated greenhouse, been there about a week and a half. Just poking their heads up, dont really like them so it's a shot to nothing!! Have a go, it's just a few seeds...

Definitely not too late. I had a variety last year that the packet said could be planted as late as July - they weren't brilliant but did get a few. So you've loads of time!
Really sorry to hear about the theft though - it is really horrible when things "disappear".

This is quite reassuring to me, as my seedlings look awful.  The cat sat on my tray of seedlings, which were on the dining room table in the sunshine, and they didn't really recover.  A lot of the seeds didn't seem to germinate either, so I may try again too.  busy_lizzie

You've got plenty of time. Mine only went in last weekend.

One thing that got my first attempt were the slugs >:(

Have now got second attempt under a row of milk bottle cloche ;D

Another suggestion is you could water the seed bed with coffee, slugs hate it  ;)
