Codling moth and apple scab
« on: March 23, 2006, 17:07:54 »
Codling moth -
I don't know if this has been discussed in earlier threads (last year?), but can anyone help with an effective control/prevention technique for use from now onwards on Minarette apple trees. I have no objection to using chemicals if there are any available. The buds are not bursting but they are begining to increase in size.
Apple scab -
What is the most effective preventative/curative treatment against this disease?

Greasebands can be put around the trunk of the tree, theses are left in place all winter and trap the codling moth as it crawls up the trunk - you may hit some now if you get the bands on quickly.
Pheromone traps are widely available - these work on a sticky principle too, but are used mainly by commercial growers to indicate the prevalance of the moth - once they see some in the trap, they know when to spray, this indicates that alone they don't do a good job, so maybe you would need to get more than one trap. Bug Clear by Scotts or Bug Free by PBI are insecticides that could be used. This will kill the larva.
For apple scab, clear debris such as leaves away from around the plant, these can harbour the fungus. If the apple is in a pot, keeping it covered from rain will help avoid the problem. Good air circulation is important. If you remove any leaves that show symptoms early, this can reduce the severity of the attack. Dithane 945 is a fungicide that can be used. Some report that a water and milk solution helps.
