From a botanical point of view they are. But they look very much like big garlic so if you're not a botanist you wouldn't notice the difference.

I have to say it... I cannot believeeee it - the number of posts (5 pages now) on size  ;D honestly size doesn't matter... ;D yet... I do admit tho; I will prefer them large when fully grown...

I think it is great how so many of us get excited about how our garlic is getting on.  some of the young lads at work think me mad  ::)

Last night we were preparing dinner when I realised I needed to get yoghurt for gdaughter's breakfast.  Rushed off to a local smarket and collected bits and bobs. At the checkout charming young Irish chap said "Do you smell garlic?" "Oh it's a lovely smell".
Suddenly realised I had rushed out from chopping garlic and had forgotten to wash my hands.
When I told him he said well you can stand by my checkout any day of the week!

Just like to report that there is STILL no sign of my garlic coming up. I think it must have failed, since the weather has gone mild which should have gotten them moving.

I guess its too late to try anew?

I bought two bulbs of Solent Wight from Dobies too late to plant in the autumn and wasn't sure what to do with them after reading these posts about planting garlic before the cold weather.
In the end I thought I would plant one bulb and save the other for planting in March.
I planted one bulb in cells on 28th January and put them in the cold frame with the lid up a bit and they are now sprouting. I will wait till March to plant the other bulb to see what difference there is between the two methods.
I've never grown garlic before so it's interesting to hear what everyone else does.

According to the Garlic Farm, you can plant Solent Wight up till March. My Albigensian Wight is all up, demonstrating the advantages of heresy, while the Solent Wight is still struggling through, and the elephants have yet to appear across the Alps.

All my Autumn sown (6 bulbs, 3 different types) are now up - even the ones driven over by the tractor.  I have now sown another three bulbs (French purple hardneck) as part of my Spring sowing.  On the packet it said I could sew up till May!

Slow steady growth here in Cheshire.  Mine is planted in the same bed as the rhubarb, which is sitting in 50/50 soil & rotted horse manure over plastic holey liner to retain moisture.  Heaven knows what that will do to the garlic later in the year, or the rhubarb either.  & as I was short of space during the path building project, the rasps are at the back of the same teeny bed.

Now the rhubarb, there's a success story - perhaps I should start a how big is your rhubarb thread.
is it in the sale?

Seeing as I started this mammoth thread thought I would bring up the century. Looked in on my garlic today, they all still look fine. Stems coming out the ground are about !/2 inch in diameter.
This is my first attempt at trying to grow garlic, cant even remember the variety but it did say extra strong on the packet. The bulbs were bought at a local garden center, said Taylors on the packet (I think).
Will keep informed as to the progress in due course.
DD ;)
