Mine's coming slowly but steadily; today I found the elephants lumbering into view, and the odd shallot showing.

I planted my garlic last autumn in a raised bed, adding sharp sand to improve drainage of my heavy soil. All 5 varieties have grown well, but there is quite a lot of variation in speed of growth depending on variety. My 7 year old wannabe gourmet is already planning pasta with 5 garlic sauce!

When did you plant them? I dug up one of my garlic today, where I'd managed to plant two cloves together, and wanted to separate them; it had about three inches of shoot and lots of roots going down about the same distance. That was planted in mid-December.

Just plodding along. They're there and should be OK.
On Friday I received two bulbs for planting now.

I am pleased to report my garlic have survived the winter and will soon be popping their heads above ground.
As a last resort i had a little carefull dig around in one of the rows and found just beneath the surface shoots where the garlic are supposed to be. So given a bit of moisture (getting a lot of that at the moment) and a bit of warmth and they will soon be up and growing.
I think the problem has been partly the weather over the winter and partly I think due to slightly too deep planting of the bulbs. Its a similar problem i have had with some ornamental spring bulbs planted around the same time.
Given the fact that garlic need cold to produce cloves rather than one big bulb, the cold winter we've had should mean a good crop this year (in the end!).
:) :) :)

Well Tim, I suppose they grow! Seriously they will probably quickly catch up with autumn plantings, but they wont make as good a crop of bulbs since they wont have had a winter to 'stratify' them. Its winter cold that encourages the bulb to split into cloves rather than just one big bulb. Also the longer they have to grow the more time the leaves have to bulk up the bulb. Better bulb = better garlic.
Hope this helps.

Tim I planted garlic this time last year cos i just had a new lottie and wanted to grow garlic. My lottie neighbours shook their heads and said no way, too late etc but since it was plant or compost i planted.
Excellent crop if a bit small. Still eating them. Good flavour. Occasional brownish or dried out clove.
I'm happy!

Solent Wight planted now apparently produces the best quality, according to the Garlic Farm. I suspect the bulbs would be a bit smaller though. I think a lot depends on the variety when it comes to late planting.

Well mine WERE on their way but the weather has decided to put the boot in yet again and put a stop to the garlic (as well as everything else in the garden!)
