top 103 songs of all time
« on: August 30, 2005, 11:44:51 »
yesterday, on manchesters local radio station (key 103) they had the top 103 songs of all time voted for by the public.

all was well until the last 5, then i dont know what happened.,

number 5, U2 - one
number 4, will young                                 ???
number 3, queen- bohemian rapsody
number 2, oasis - wonderwall
number 1, robbiw williams -angels.

i mean robbie williams!!! i thought oasis would have been number 1 with it being manchester and would have loved it to be, but robbie williams?!?

i could think of about 103 songs that i could put before that.

Anyhow little rant over, what would youre top 5 songs be of all time.

mine would be:

5) oasis - ciggarettes and alcohol
4) Stone roses - i am the resurrection
3) Queen - bohemian rapsody
2) Nirvana - smells like teen spirit
1) Oasis - wonderwall

Youre go.

definitely none of those that were voted in their list!

um... right now this is what springs to mind. It'd probably change later.

5 - Jonie Mitchell, Woodstock
4 -
3 -
2 -
1 -

OK - that's as far as I can get. I could vote for whole albums, but I can't decide which is my favourite song.

let's try again...

4 - Jimi Hendrix, 1984 (a merman I should long to be)
3 - Cat Stevens, King of the trees, the boy with the moon and stars on his head, the wind...
2 - Pink Floyd, Echoes, Shine on you crazy diamond, Breath, Comfortably numb
1 - The Grateful Dead, Dark Star, Sugar Magnolia, China Cat Sunflower/I know you rider

Oh and Bjork's Vespertine - the whole album

I seem to be having trouble deciding!
gone to pot :D

LMAO Madmum - I know the feeling.  Woke in the night singing Tweenies theme tune.  WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME  ::)

And yes, it is Big Cook and Little Cook doing the ads - somehow doesn't seem right if they are not acting like total morons does it  ;)

love this site, it is far more interesting than Cbeebies site that my pc seems to know how to access on it's own now!
Love BCLC, can't believe that they are doing Cricket, maybe the Aussies could use them! At least the tea would be made from interesting food!

He's a bigfan too - he wears a white jumpsuit all the time!
He was named by my 10 year old who would put his top five songs as follows:

No 5      Jailhouse Rock by Elvis
No 4      Don't be cruel  by Elvis
No 3      His latest flame   by Elvis
No 2      Hard Headed Woman by Elvis
No 1      Stuck on You   by guess who!!!

Another theme here I think

Here are mine.  You can tell which era I come from:

Heard it through the grapevine - Marvin Gaye
Here, there everywhere            -  The Beatles
Auqa marina                              -  Santana
Blue                                           -  Joni Mitchell
Wichita Lineman                        -  Glen Campbell

Of course tomorrow they will be entirely different depending on what mood I am in.   :) busy_lizzie

wow, Glenn Campbell - didn't think of that one!

Maybe a possible money earner for this site, A4A CD, ideal to take to the lottie, or put on your I-pod of course!

We could all send in a list and the most popular go on a CD, possible title "Can you dig it?"

Madmum, I hope you weren't being derogatory about Glen Campbell.  ;D  ;D  Think the reason for that unlikely choice is that it was a particuarly happy time in my life, when I met my husband.  Out also at that time was My Song, Elton John and Space Oddity, David Bowey. Hearing them all brings it all back - music is great!!  :D busy_lizzie

Hey Buzy Lizzie was not having a dig at Glenn, those songs are fab too.

There's just too much to choose from, I really like some of the "old stuff" as well like Frank Sinatra etc.
I was bought up on the old musicals etc, so won't knock anything unless it's rap (and no that's not rhyming slang!)
Can't see the point of waving your fingers around while shouting and wearing clothes that I just want to pull up to where they were meant to be worn! Can't be doing with all this show your pants and have your jeans down around your knees!
off my soapbox and back to planting bulbs now!

I seem to be having trouble deciding!

I have the same problems with single tracks - I do not buy compilations be they by one band or (even worse) a compilation of bands.  There is always far too much chaff to get through as they are always someone elses choice - this is why I rarely listen to music radio before 9pm.  I will think about my top 5 tracks but for now here is my permanently evolving top 5 albums:

Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
Beta Band - The Three EPs
Gorky's - Bwyd Time
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
PF - Piper at the Gates  of Dawn

Bands with albums just outside are Spacement 3/Spiritualized, Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Grateful Dead, Love.  Depending on my mood any of these could make it - I think it is the sunny day that is making it quite accoustic today.  My indivcual trcks would probably be culled from these as well.

PS I am sure I have forgotten somebody.

Donovan - Season of the Witch
The Great Society - White Rabbit
Incredible String Band - There is a Green Crown
Grateful Dead - Mountains of the Moon
Nick Drake - Which Will

In any order - as I say my choice depends upon my mood and is very variable.

Some say (I got Devil) - Melanie Safka
Take this longing - Leonard Cohen
All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Sukiyaki - Sakamoto Kyu (I have clip for this, if you want it, sent me a pm)
Banana boat song?(Day-oh, day-ay-ee-oh, daylight come and I wanna go home...) by Harry Belafonte I think.

Hi I'm back from my two day holiday  :)  I'm an old woman, nearly 50. but I LOVE Stone Roses, Resurrection.  it must be one of my all time favourite records.  I love everything about it  :)

I'm glad Max Romeo has found his way onto this forum  ;D  Sukiyaki - I thought there was only me had heard of him  ;D  I am a big fan of Bob Marley and I really like Rock Steady  :)  Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd I like, Janis Joplin who no-one has mentioned.

My fave records though - probably Rod Stewart Mandolin Wind, or Jodie  :)
I love Tim Hardin's Reason to Believe.  My faves though are Billie Holliday and Nina Simone :).  They are both dead so I go to Rod gigs which I enjoy a whole lot  ;D

I came, I saw, I composted
