I love the taste of kale, but it stinks the house out when cooking it. Somebody advised me to put a bay leaf in the water when we are cooking it and what do you reckon, it works. How come nobody has ever mentioned this before. I had a very very small hint of the bay in the taste, but nothing detrimental to the usual taste. It is supposed to work with all the brassicas.

I must be weird as I can't smell anything after cooking kale - maybe a because don't cook it for long or maybe I have a rubbish sense of smell?

I did have a read up about it after I found out the bay leaf trick, other ways of keeping the smell down was not to cook it too long. We steam ours but I don't like crunchy veg so it is done for a long time.

Hard to find kale here but sometimes available in weekly markets.  No veg plot here yet but we'll be growing kale and cavolo nero.

Love green cabbage but we like it lightly steamed or stir fried so never had a problem with smells.  I've started roasting cauliflower lately but more often eat it raw.

There may be a genetic component to this - some people are more sensitive to the (sulphur?) compounds in brassicas, especially Brussels sprouts (yes, your children may genuinely hate the taste) - and this could be relevant here, you are smelling what others do not.

They're the only brassica I can't eat.  Hate the smell too.
