yesterday I planted some carrot seeds, using the compost in the trench method as our soil is newly dug and not very tilth-like yet.  When I went to the lottie today I found a neat hole dug in the row, about the size of an apple.  being a newbie I was puzzled, but so was my very experienced partner.  He had just been showing me fox excrement, so we knew we'd had a fox in, but it was a bit small for a fox to dig, and for what reason?  Also, we do get rabbits, but again, nothing green showed any sign of being nibbled, and so there didn't seem any reason why a rabbit would dig a hole to get at a carrot seed.  He thought it was too big and tidy a hole to have been a blackbird.  Any ideas?

A young fox is the likely culprit!

I think it probably was the fox as it appeared on the same day as the evidence of visitation.  But why would it did a hole just there?

We have a young fox aptly named Digger who digs holes all over the site for no seemingly obvious reason.  Plot neighbours have also found chicken eggs, half a loaf and other items buried by foxes whilst digging their plots.

It could be a Jay or simular burrying acorns.
