i have made a few frames for cold-frames to sit on top of beds - anyone know where I can get some thick but cheap polythene to cover the frames - any top tips?

Heavy duty polythene dust sheets from B&Q.  Dirt cheap, huge, and you can staple it on the frame in no time.

I made a greenhouse out of 2" x 1" timber and said dust sheets a few years ago and the only thing that punctured it was a rather fat cat descending from the apple tree via the greenhouse roof.

I used this stuff http://www.allplas.co.uk/acatalog/Ultra_Violet_Inhibited_Polythene_Sheeting.html  I'ts UV resistant and very strong.

Monoflex scaffolding sheet is the toughest and can be as little as 50p per sqm.

It may be difficult to buy less than a 2m x 45m roll (extremely good value for a really giant cloche), but if you approach some scaffolders they will probably tell you when the battered stuff they are using will be coming down - it will save them dumping it in the skip and there will be plenty of undamaged bits for the odd cloche.

You can buy the same stuff as clear tarp in more convenient sizes but it will cost you 75-100p per sqm.
