Bought a little shrub in Sainsburys today, a Ceonothus 'Skylark'. Didnt have much in the way of instructions with it, does anyone know where it should be planted?

Says it reaches a height of 1.8 metres and 1.5 wide, and is good for ground cover. And to plant in a sheltered spot.

Does it need a wall to shelter against? Or would it be OK against a trellis which gets a bit of draught but is partly sheltered by a neighbouring house? And how quick do they grow/flower?

Thanks

I think you will find the 1.5 width is a bit underestimated more like double that. It will need loads of room to spread unless you train it up a wall or trellis. They are pretty well bombproof and will stand all sorts of environments. But beware, ceonothus is notorious for just giving up and dying for no reason. Usually just after you have planned an area around it. Make sure you give it a good haircut every year after flowering, to get a double flush and plenty of bloom next year.

They estabish very quickly. It might be small now so don't be decieved.

Thanks Ace! I thought they were quite big.
