Apologies if you already know some of this, but you don't say whether you already brew beer, and what knowledge you have.

Traditionally English beer uses two types of hop, Fuggles and Goldings.  Fuggles (which are cheaper) are used in brown ale and similar "ale" style beers.  Bright bitter beers need Goldings.

Lagers are another sack of hops entirely, and you need to look at continental varieties of hop.

I've never tried growing my own hops, mainly because of the problem of drying them.  I guess that you could use a food drying machine such as an Excalibur.  This site http://www.aplus-hops.co.uk/index.php , which is very informative, suggests that you can dry hops in the airing cupboard.  I'm sure that you can, but every piece of linen that you own will soon be infused with the aroma!  Aplus also give a good guide to growing and to varieties.

You might also like to look at http://www.brew-monkey.com/brewschool/allhops.php to compare different hop varieties.

If you're new to brewing, I strongly suggest that you start with brown ale, porter, or stout.  These are much easier to make a success of, and don't come to any harm if there's a bit of haze, which your home-grown hops are very likely to introduce.

Good luck!
