Frogs/Toads in Winter.

Although having a stark high tech vegetable garden - raised beds etc. There are quite a few frogs and toads hopping about (one is a feature in the greenhouse).  What do I need to do to keep them happy over Winter?  I think boxes of hay/straw is the thing, but how do I help the things find their abodes? I've found some that have dug themselves into my veg patch before. You can bury terracotta pots or pipes filled with straw or leaves and leave a gap for them to get into, obviously. Or a log pile would do them well. Males naturally hybernate in the mud at the bottom of the pond, if you have one.

I've had some hide away in some paving slabs, so we've made a 'wall' with gaps and planted some of the holes so it should be safe for them.

A favourite place for ours is the compost heap.  When we dig it out in the Spring we always come across loads.  Must be nice and warm and comfy cosy in there during the Winter months.   busy_lizzie
