Potatoes again

We went up to the plot yesterday, couldn't go for 6 days as the was out of action. We were amazed how much the potatoes had grown but on a couple of them there were some things that looked like roots. They were just above the soil & about 6"long on the swift. OH earthed them up more, is this where the potatoes are formed.

As long as you've earthed up and left 3/4 inches growth they should be fine, give them a good watering if the soil is dry.

our spuds grow on white, crispy roots attached to the main stem..just unearthed some to get some for tea

grannyjanny, have your 'Swift' grown very tall?  Mine seem to be slow, even my lates have overtaken them.

Hi Sinbad. Yes they have, I was surprised as I thought they were short ones but then it is our first year so I don't know how tall they should be.

Thanks for that grannyjanny.  I didn't realise you could get short ones.

I have never grown Swift before so felt a bit disappointed that they hadn't grown as well as the other varieties I had put in.

So maybe no need for me to worry about them.

I'm growing Swift early potatoes, which have been in the ground nine weeks so I'm giving them another week or two before I have a gentle firkle!

Can't wait to have a firkle . Don't we love to use that word. Just got Bob Flowerdews going organic book (book people) & he said to take the flowers off to increase the yield, did I see that on here also.
