Are caddis flies good or bad to have in your garden? I seem to be over-run by the things!! At night the patio doors are literally covered in them. They have a disconcerting habit if dropping off the doors to the ground when disturbed - which freaks me out a bit - I'd much rather that they simply flew away.

Eileen.

P.S. Sorry Ina I seem to have picked the same title for my post as one of yours.  Embarrassed

Sorry Eileen but I'm not sure - I have a feeling that larvae being in your pond though means that it is healthy. I wouldn't know a caddis fly if it came up and introduced itself!

Thanks for your reply Plocket.
I've heard too that the larvae are a good sign in a pond - it was just the adults I wasn't too sure of. However, I've now found out that they are pretty harmless even although they look so daunting.

Aren't caddis fly larvae the ones that decorate themselves with bits of grit and sticks to "camouflage" themselves?

Yes they are Spurdie!! I don't mind the larvae at all but the adults, in such large numbers, give me the creeps.  Shocked
