Rallying Call!
« on: July 06, 2007, 23:00:19 »
Okay folks, that's it!

I can't just sit on my hands while some of you are facing ruined crops. For those whose allotments have been affected by the awful weather and who are not too depressed and downhearted (and no-one would blame you) to try again, I've been ploughing through all my books for advice on what can be sown now. I've also been trawling through posts on this site to find out what others are still sowing - either in the ground or - more importantly - in pots, tubs & bags. The list is below. Bearing in mind that the weather all over has slowed down a lot of growth, I'm sure there are other things that can be sown later than usual and will catch up when we get the glorious late summer we so richly deserve.

So here's my proposal - and I know many people have already offered spare stuff individually - those of us with any spare seeds or plants to offer, particularly of the items on the list below, let's bag 'em up and offer them on a specific thread on the Swap Shop site, which would be only for our flooded friends to make use of. I'm happy to start the ball rolling on this, so I've opened the thread, which goes by the inspired name of... er... Rallying Call!

With apologies for the length of this post, here's the list:

beans - climbing beans, dwarf french beans, dwarf runners, French beans, runner beans (late July)
beetroot
cabbage - quick growing cabbage, greyhound cabbage, spring cabbage
carrots
cauliflower: autumn cauliflower
chard
courgettes
cucumbers
endive
fennel
kale
kohl rabi
leaf salad
leeks
lettuce
mooli
oriental greens
pak choi
peas
potatoes
pumpkins
radish
salad crops - leaves and roots
Spinach
spinach beet
spring onions
sprouts
squash
sweetcorn,
Swiss Chard
turnips
Winter radish

Come on troops, let's get this road on the show!

(oh dear, no more elderflower champagne for me, I fear)

Good idea Amazin, thanks for the research.

We could set up a Yorkshire/Humberside seed parcel - have loads of beans, cabbage, beetroot and salad leaves seeds

Would need the Yorkshire/Humberside peeps to put their names down and need another list of people who are donating.

If we can get the info together before the 14th I am happy to co-ordinate.

Your list should be a Wiki, Amazin?

Wow, amazin, thanks so much for the list  ;D

We're by no means in the worst affected area, but have had our plots flooded and have virtually lost everything.

I'll certainly be taking heart from your list above, and i'm so chuffed to see carrots on there  ;D  ;D  ;D

One question - are we talking sowing seed now, or putting in plug plants? thanks again  :-*

I've just had a free gift from Thompson & Morgan of seeds so I'm quite willing to donate them!

I've got:

White Lady runner bean (sow May/June)
Salad Leaves - Niche Mixed (sow March - Sept)
Calabrese - Belstar F1 Hybrid (sow April to June)
Carrots - Autumn King (sow 'til mid-summer)
Watercress - OH THE IRONY! DON'T ALL RUSH AT ONCE!
Tomato - Ferline F1 hybrid
Tomato - Ildi

Tomatoes are worth a shot indoors? Whaddyathink?

So what now? Do we send them to 1 person to distribute them?

Kitten,

I was thinking that perhaps people could take the seeds and start them off in trays, pots, bags, buckets, whatever, then when their plots are up and running they'd have some babies ready to put in. And of course, if anyone has spare plug plants to offer, that would be ideal. Anyway, PLEASE check out the stuff on offer in the Swap Shop thread of the same name.

Tim,

A wiki? 'Fraid my knowledge of technology is not as good as it used to not be! Is that where they put a man inside a large straw-like statue and set him alight?   ;D

thank you so much for the list. I'm in Hull and our lottie was under about 3' of water, it was soul destroying. it still hasn't dried out fully but i was able to plant out a few things that i had in pots ready to go out. I've also had a go at planting other seeds that should have been planted by June, as you said, they should catch up, hopefully.

for anyone who is just starting out on a lottie ( there are quite a few new ones on our site) don't get disheartened, if you don't manage to get much this year, though there is no reason why you can't still get something out of it, there's always next year. and after all, it's not every day you see koi carp swimming among your veggies!!

Not quite as drastic as that, Amazin - just put it in FAQ in the A4A toolbar.
