numbers

at the bottom right corner of my posts, when other people have the word 'logged'.  I've clicked on each persons 'logged' and mine and it reads the same.  Have I been naughty or have I just missed something out.

We can only see our own numbers, because yours just says logged.  We need an IT person to explain.

It seems that only you see the number. I see a number on mine, but I bet it says "logged" to you.

The number is your IP address. The system must keep it secret from everyone else, though.

Your IP address is shown only to you and moderators. Remember that this information is not identifying, and that most IPs change periodically.

You cannot see other members' IP addresses, and they cannot see yours.

It's our IP address, will therfore delete mine from the post and suggest you do too, incase we get hacked or 'sumfink'

Next question         what is an IP address

I expect it's a security thing: you can see your own IP address but not those of others.  Probably helps stop ID theft on the boards, or at least help to detect it.

Phew.......... all numbers now deleted, security risk over.  It must have been a senior moment.  I didn't want us all swapping Id' and becoming each other.  Now there's a thought.  Grin  Grin  Grin

That very thing happened on one of my Trade forums...some hacker managed to get into other peoples ID's and started to delete posts and generally cause mayhem.

Controller had to radically alter the system to prevent this happening.

This computer lark is all Greek to me

A lot of ISPs have what is called dynamic IP allocation, ie every time you log out your IP addy goes back to a pool that belongs to the ISP, and is reallocated.  Next time you log on, you get another one.  It means the ISP doesn't have to own as many IP numbers as it has customers - and so is cheaper.

About a decade ago when the net was just getting going,  static IPs were given out to people. A few ISPs still have them, eg demon.  But the vast majority don't. Makes it harder to track folk too.

Your IP address is the real way that the internet ID's you.  For the purposes of this and other sites they log them so they can ban you if you overstep the mark.  If they banned user names, the perps would just change them.

This is all very interesting, I like to learn something new every day. Anything that makes it harder to track me is good in my book - not that I intend to do anything wrong, mind you.  Just hate the thought of being 'hacked'.
Thanks folks.

I'm waiting delivery of a new computer with more memory and hard drive, etc.  This one keeps crashing and the monitor is looking very poorly indeed.

Could it be that we only remember/learn things that are important to us.  I could sit and listen to someone taking about Allotments, veg growing, recycling and the like, all day long and learn lots of new things.  But listen to an eminent scientist talking about science thingies and it will all go in one ear and out the other.

I think that as we get older, we priorities things more. Anything that isn't important to us we don't bother with. But, what is important to me may not be important/of interest to others.

Perhaps there are some A4A scientists that would find science thingies interesting.  Grin  Grin

I think that you are right, in that we become selective in our learning issues. I realise that I can't know everything, and so focus on those areas of immediate interest, eg vegetables, music, some capabilities with the computer. I am also interested in doing so many things that I didn't bother with previously, eg learning to skate, skiing at some future point. I am also struggling to get fit enough to run a marathon (at my age, I must be bonkers). And generally being sociable ...
