Secondary crop

            Reading one of my vegetable  books on the subject of cabbages, it says when the cabbages are ready to harvest if you cut them off leaving the stem and cut across the top of the stem you will get a crop of smaller cabbages, anyone tried this method, :)

yes, do it all the time.
make the cut a cross then you will get 4 smaller cabbages

Same here, and you get some mighty fine ones at that.

Not sure cutting is necessary - I just left my whopping great big Tundra alone and it's produced about 15 mini-cabbages out of the stem.

What exactly do you mean cut across? Do you mean make a horizontal cut across the stem to take the cabbage head off?

Instead of lifting the cabbage you cut the head off at the base and then cut a cross into the top of the stalk, from this you get four more cabages

Well it would be a bit fiddly doing it on sprouting brocolli..............

Brocolli was the only one I knew about before I read this thread!

I grew Brocolli last year and my neighbour told me to leave the plant in situ after cutting. A few weeks later the plant grew little florets.

I certainly didn't know about the cauli or cabbage, I'm wondering what else would work?
