Hoeing

Some advice please on the best way to hoe (this post is in the basics, not watershed so apprpriate answers please!  ;) ). Some have told me to hoe only in bright sunshine some have told me to hoe only on dry crusty soil? What's the deal here? When hoeing should I be aiming to hook the weed out or just scrape the top off? Many thanks!!  :) .

Thanks TeeGee, from your link the hoe I have inherited looks like a draw hoe and from the description of hoeing in the 'dutch hoe' section I think I should be slicing the tops off the weeds and large annual weeds dig or 'skutch' out? Correct? ???

Correct!

I find the multi purpose hoe very useful as it cuts on the push stroke and also on the drag stroke, meaning it pulls the cut off section of weed/s back towards you. Which can then be raked up and disposed of.

ideally you would hoe in dry, breezy conditions and on a dry soil.

This means the hoe is slicing the tops off the weeds which then wither and die, without the plant above ground the roots follow.

If the ground is wet/damp and you hook the weeds out, then they will just re-root.  :)

You'll find Teddy that your hoe will be your most valueable tool at this time of the year with all the new weeds appearing every day.         ;D ;D ;D

I think its the best tool in the garden
Hoe at first light on a hot and breezy day the weeds will be dead at night.
