Hi! i discovered the other day that i had failed in killing my grape vine, or rather the kittens had (they chewd its leaves off last yr and it didnt grow anymore, then it got left out in the cold n rain b4 i took pity on it n stuck it in the garage, its in a pot...) anyway it has buds on it now so im quite chuffed and would like to look after it a little better this yr, its still in its pot and now in the conservatory as i thought it might like the warmth but i know absoloutely nothing about vines and how to get my stubby buddy stick past the leaves stage and how long itd take to get grapes from it??? absoloutley not a clue as you can tell!! (it was half price in  tescos last yr n seemed a good idea at the time!) any advice is welcome as my fruit mad kids have high expectations!!! many thanx! (again!!) louise xx and kids xxxx
i think i like it here :D now who can tell me how to grow my own chocolate???

They (Vines) are almost indestructible Louise, but getting grapes is a difficult job. Do you know the variety?
:-\

Arumlily

It takes three years for the grapes to appear. I have one in my greenhouse, not the best place I'm told. But I prune it all the time to keep it under control or it will take over the greenhouse. They like plenty of water. As for what variety mine is I have no idea for OH bought it for me many moons ago and he has forgotten the name. Mine is green grapes and it is seedless.

not a clue as the label didnt say it just had a picture of purple grapes and i thought ooooh.... a you do!

im quite pleased theyre indestructable (has to be in my garden!!!) the leaves are looking like they want to open and will definately keep it well watered (pop it outside for 5 minutes a day should do it! lol! no less than that....)
i remember my aunt having one growing up the side of the house, it was also green grapes and she is useless with plants and never did anything to it, but im guessing it was well established,

i dont mind this one taking over the conservatory as its got a fair bit of space to go wild in and im guessing the pot size might restrict it (think i should go buy it a bigger pot...) what sort of soil does it like? do i feed it and if so what?!? will have to try and google it i suppose, thanx for youre replys tho! lou xx

thanx tee gee, im a little confused but get that yes i need 2 repot in fresh soil it likes bonemeal (99p shop, yay!) and well rotted compost or manure, will have 2 hope the fresh compost is food enough methinks! not sure about all this cuttings lark n how many side shoots and so on  but i will mist it with the spray thingy ive got in the mornings (kids job!) and maybe pop it outside for bumbles if i get any flowers, i think if we can even get some good growth (before the kitties eat it off) ill be pleased and so will the kids, im not so sure i want it manured if im keeping it in the house but i guess its an option and am pleased 2 read the frosts i left it out in most likely did it some good, yay! thanx again :) lou xx

at some point you will need to tie in the leader and laterals right & left growth from new side shoots = keep strongest and stop others 2  leaves beyond flowers (or 5/6 leaves), pinch out any further side shoots after one leaf

they like blood - my great grandmother used to keep grapes and they would always go and get a bucket of blood from the local abattoir  :o

I have a foster's seedling in my g/h - abundant crops - you'll need a fine pair of long pointed scissors to prune out excess fruits so they can get to a good size

I have a grape growing in the far corner of my greenhouse and train it down every other roof support. It provides good shade in summer so I don't have to paint or use greenhouse shading.

Grapes are not great but I get enough for a gallon or two of wine.
Tony.

Sow it, grow it, eat it.

Too get dessert size grapes you have to restrict the number of bunches to about one per foot of cane and take out at least half of the tiny grapes to allow the others to swell...

I know someone who plants 17' rows of carrot seed singly at 4" spacing, Lettuce, leek and spring onions the same...

Maybe I could get him to do it for me if he gets bored.  ::)
