OMG!

I didn't know it would cost that much.

We need to hire a skip to get rid of all the junk we've dug out of the soil (believe me - it's a lot!) Just called one company and they said it'll be £140 + £25 permit to have it on the road. £165!!!!

Call me cheap, but I'd rather spend that much on plants.

Any other way to get rid of nasty old bit of rusty metal, rubbishy stones, huge lumps of clay etc?

call the council and see if they can do it for cheaper?
or, pack it into rubble bags, into the back of the car, and make several hundreds of trips down to the local tip, for free

get friends to help, many hands make light work

best of luck

Don't you know anyone with a large trailer or a van you can borrow for a small fee? ???

Won't your Council collect your metal? they do for us and we put it outside and by the time they decide to collect the local Tatters have nicked it. :o ;D

Thanks for those suggestions.

I've been off doing more net research.

The rubbish dump is too far away, as we don't have a car, we'd need to enlist MIL and I don't think that's fair on her.

Van - no. Closest I know of is the horse trailer. but see above.

tried the council, but they charge even more than the skip company for skip hire.

They do bulky collections, but said no rubble. this is all nothing but rubble.

darn. I suppose I'm just going to have to stop being so cheap and hire the blooming thing.

we have a similar situation, there is a van hire company near us that does 4 hour hire for £20 and 9-5 for £30 so we are going to get one of those and make a few trips to the dump ourselves.

You have to watch heading to the dump with a van these days - it can be tough convincing the blokes on the gate that you're not a commercial builder etc trying to get rid of stuff on the cheap.

Take some I.D with you with your address on it, to prove you're living in the area. They'll probably insist on weighing you in and out (the truck, not you personally), but then even if they do charge you for disposal it will (with the van hire) probably be less than the cost of the skip.

Hows about using some of the rubble to make a nice sculpture covered with earth and turf?

Shedifice - nice idea. But there's no room in the garden. It's only about 7m x 7m and most of it is planted up (apart from the big pile of rubbish that takes up about 1/6 of the garden - not including the stuff in the cupboard under the stairs - believe me there's a lot of it. I have that corner of the garden ear marked for another periennial border next year. Although it'll probably turn into another veg patch!)
