Spindly Tomato Seedlings

My tomato seedlings, which I am growing on a windowsill are tall and spindly. What have I done wrong? Can I still plant them outside in a few weeks? What can I do to improve their sturdiness?

Welcome on board.

The technical term for it is "leggy". The tomato plants have been given too much heat, but not enough light.

Try to move them somewhere slightly cooler or brighter. But must be frost free.

It is much too early to plant them out. Depending where you are in the country, you could still get frost until late May/early June.

when they have developed their first pair of true levaes, you can pot them on - and pot them much deeper than they were, i.e. you can bury them up to their seed leaves. that should take care of some of the leggyness :)
