Possible Blackcurrent bush?

Having cut down some of the long grass on Plot No.2,  I've found a plant I'm not too sure about.

It looks a bit like a raspberry cane, maybe about 2ft high, no prickles but I noticed it has flower buds down the stem.  These are a sort of creamy/pale yellow.

I'm wondering if it could be a blackcurrent?  I believe the previous tenant was very fond of soft fruit.

So far, I've found two of them, more or less side by side.

I'll try and take a pic of it tomorrow - should have done that today but left my mobile in the car.

Golach...black currant is easy to identify...you only need to rub your hands on the leaves ( or maybe tear small piece out) and you should smell blackcurrants.. :icon_cheers:
'No smell' could mean red or white currants.... :icon_thumright:
You do get prickle free gooseberries but the flowers appear slightly differently on the bush...they come in one's or in pairs from the stems where as currant's flowers dangle down like bunch of grapes from one stalk.

To be honest it could be anything - pictures will be key here.

However, as mentioned blackcurrants smell blackcurranty - a crushed leaf smells like a glass of Ribena.

Would really need a picture to properly identify it, care to upload?

Didn't get down to the plot today.  Late in finishing work and raining here.  Hope to get down tomorrow and take a pic of it.

Bruise a lef in your hands and smell it... no smell = not blackcurrant, strong blackcurranty smell = blackcurrant, can't remember if the modern weird hybrids like Jostaberry smell of anything

Jostaberries do not smell of blackcurrant and their flowers are large and two tone whitish/brown/purple - very pretty.  Not the pale yellow of red and white currants.  Also the number of flowers in the 'grape' is smaller than currants.  My currents are flowering now, but my goosegogs have set fruit already.

And the mystery plant is....

(drum roll...)

A gooseberry bush.

It has baby gooseberries on it.

But you said no prickles... gooseberries have prickles..

It sounds very much like a Jostaberry to me.  I have one in a pot, which I bought last Autumn and is ready to plant in my soft fruit area.  It has no prickles, the leaves do not smell of blackcurrants and the fruit at the moment looks like gooseberries.

Time will tell and at the rate my currants and goosegogs are developing this year, they will soon be ready to eat, so you won't have to wait many more weeks to know for definite what yours is.

In my experience, gooseberries definitely have prickles, although I would say more long extremely sharp spines! Have never seen a gooseberry that is not like that!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

It has prickles - found out yesterday when I had a good look at it and one got me.

Definitely a gooseberry.

Have to find that recipe for Gooseberry Fool.
