Blue Morning Glories: a question or three

Are blue morning glories (I think they're called Heavenly Blue) more difficult to grow than other colors? For the past years, and I mean many years, I've bought seed for blue ones, and they never bloom, but other colors do bloom for me and also come up on there own.

I've tried buying from different seed companies each time to no avail. This year, I started some Heavenly Blue in pots and carefully transplanted in different places in the yard with some edging around them to prevent interlopers. Only 1 (ONE) blue flower has opened and that was today! Rather late, I'd told it, to show up in Sept. Yet the usual purple (Dr.Ott) have been blooming their heads off since July. The blue vines look healthy, some growing up a tree, and I haven't been adding nitrogen. Any directions would be appreciated because I'd really enjoy having more blue flowers in the garden.

I've always believed "Heavenly Blue" was the easiest, here in Britain... certainly I've always found it most reliable. I have much more trouble with the red ones. I let some seed in the greenhouse one year (unheated) and they come up year after year, although they have reverted to a white flower with a red/pink cross in the centre, like the reverse of our native field bindweed which is pink with a white cross, but the flowers are still full size and they aren't making an over wintering root...  :sunny:

The fucia pink ones have done well for me. Maybe Sadad I'll try growing them in the walk-in coldframe and train them outside through a hole between the windows. Thank you for the idea :icon_cheers:

I have always considered the blue ones to be a bit of a weed.

Looks like they are being used as a high again.  The seeds were very difficult to get at one time because they were withdrawn from the shops.   Looks like they grow very well somewhere, you can buy the seeds by the 1000 for a few $$ from Amazon.

If you like blue flowers have you tried honeywort,   There are always forgetmenot.

GrannieAnnie

I'v grown forgetmenots but not honeywort which might be called Clary Sage here. It looks like a very dark blue. What I'd like is the tall big wall of bright blue that the blue morning glories give which can be seen from a distance. I'm going to give them one more chance.  Just one. :BangHead:

I grow the Heavenly Blue every year, don't put them outside though....I keep them in rather small pots, and though the stem loses all its leaves and goes disgustingly manky, I usually get a good show of flowers- I put one in my parents conservatory this year and it had over 100 flowers over a couple of months, nothing compares to that colour. I haven't tried putting them outside, though, I wind them mostly through other plants in my conservatory.

Not sure honeywort is sage clary.   Grows from seed and self seeds well. Cerinthe major.  A friend of mine has it lovely.  But not a wall more a little nodding gem.

My next door neighbour has a vivid blue bush but it does not do it for very long.

Sage clary is  a Salvia.   Blue salvias are lovely saw a bedding display of it like a blue carpet.  I think it was this one.

Yes, I grew that type blue salvia two years and it was very vivid and beautiful, even in part sun against the house though they said to grow in full sun. The flowers were more interesting than the normal sage, more ball-like almost like grape hyacinth tho the plant itself was much taller of course.

Okay I'm trying one more time on the Heavenly Blue morning glory with new seed from different company. I soaked the seed, planted it indoors Mar 24  AND it sprouted already showing some green!  This is way to early to plant out (we have snow) which means it may be a monster but at least I know the seed is fresh.
