Some years ago I had seeds for some lettuce variety that was said to grow HUGE..
I can't remember where it was from..HSL>realseeds..?? All I know it wasn't from 'normal' seed companies=commercial variety as such.
Of course I don't have the brown envelope anymore and nor I remember the name though perhaps there was word 'bunny' involved..can't remember..just pulling some random thoughts from my brain...

Anyway..the variety I did grow is not what I'm truly after but what I would like to know....what varieties that you know of/ have grown that grow distinctly large...is there monster lettuces around?

I have bought but not yet tried 'Optima' from Real Seeds: "This is a huge glowing green lettuce with rounded leaves....."  Could this be it?

By the way, did the Allium triquetrum I once sent you survive? Are you regretting it if so??? I am yanking out handfuls of the leaves for salads and flavourings while waiting for chives to get bigger.

Optima doesn't ring a bell...though now that you've mentioned it, I shall check it out.

As for the Allium..yes, it has survived and it haven't taken over..the clump has grown only slightly larger. I did plant it in very challenging position under black currant bush where it gets shaded once the bush open its leaves..thank you for reminding me. I will check them out tomorrow how they are doing. Chives and other perennial oniony things around the plot have barely put any new growth yet so it will be nice treat if there is some greenery to harvest.
I just might dig some up later on plant few somewhere else, bit more 'friendlier' ground...and we'll see how they take on then :toothy10:

Has anybody grown this from HSL..  'Bunyard's Matchless'?
I think I had packet seeds some years ago but cannot remember if it was a BIG lettuce..and I think this is what my brain was trying to remember earlier on. I must be getting old...I'm already starting to forget things.. :drunken_smilie:
Etty sell Balloon lettuce that they state being BIG..anybody grown that?

For some reason I have BIG fixation with veg varieties this year.... :glasses9:

Was it lettuce Liller?  from HSL.

"Liller"
...no, that one I only just heard about last year..does it grow very large?

Brain is funny thing....I can remember when I looked at the description of the 'cannot remember variety'..it said something like.."it truly lives to its name as ....couldn't cope eating it all..' ..and me having this 'bunny' word lodged in my head...hence 'bunnyard's matchless'. I think saying 'few years ago'..is more than just 'few'..
Oh well...it is not that important..I just wanted try get over this nagging memory of a big lettuce variety..there is plenty of other lettuces in the world to explore.. :icon_cheers:

Liller is big, but not outrageously so.  Thought it might be because it is described as BIG in the HSL catalogue.  One well grown head definitely fills a large salad bowl.

Hope you find your BIIIIG one
