....or does anybody else think that seed potatoes have gone  up that much in price it's worth growing them?

Price over flavour.Your own grown will taste better. Also the preparation, earthing up and digging out the crop really works your soil well for later crops of salad stuff etc.

My horticultural society are selling them at £1-35 a kilo this year, which is up by 10p from last year.  There are 14 varieties, and members can buy any quantity they like.

It is if I can replicate last years crop!
Planted 10 spuds and got 4 stones of spuds back.  I think it was Sarpo Mira - other varieties didn't do as well but I still have a sack to get through.

They do seem to be considerably more expensive in our local garden centre.   But it has also changed hands.  We used to have them loose.   They are £4.94 for two kg so looks like someone is making a good profit if you can sell them for £1.35 a kg.

I ordered mine from T&M when they had free postage.  Got various offers but it remains to be seen if that is a huge mistake.   

I am finding my beloved Desiree are not longer available in the shops round here so looks like I will have to grow them.

I have not been impressed with the apparent quality/apparance of the prepacked samples seed potatoes available locally, signs of damage/decay etc. Possibly the result of poor handling and storage in (heated) garden centres. Do members have any definative evidence that these types of seed potatoes are in fact "selected, disease free and superior" on balance to self selected , saved  examples from ones' own harvested crop?

Got our first earlies from Wilko's. £2:40 per 2kg bag. Good quality. Should be planting the swift out next week under cloches as the ground is manured and dried out enough now.

I am very suspicious of bought in seed potatoes when the blight started the first year on a new site it started in a patch of locally sources seed potatoes.

Looks like wilko is the place to go.

It was not that long a go Wilko's sold there spuds in 3 kg bags for the price they now sell a bloody 2kg bag,£3.40 seems to be the norm for 2kg in this neck of the woods.
