Stopping pumpkins

Our pumpkin wants to take over the whole allotment site! We've stopped the main stem a couple of leaves after the last fruit. It is now throwing out side shoots. Should these be taken off next to the main stem - or should we leave a couple of sets of leaves on the side shoot before taking it off?

You could try turning the stems round so it's growing to and fro across the same bit of ground.
