Dried Peas

Someof my pea seeds have not germinated. However in my kitchen store cupboard I have some dried peas. Can these be planted and expect normal pease?

I think someone did this, it may not have been on A4A. Alyc Fowler, edible garden used lion dried peas for pea shoots.

I like pea shoots so wouldn't mind if I just got those!

I know it sounds daft but store cupboard peas are the only ones I grow!

They grow about 18 inches tall and the are the "self supporting" kind so the tendrils are like branches that knit together.

The peas are good too - of the mealy marrowfat type as you would expect but since they get frozen down anyway for winter stews/soups etc. it's no problem.

I've planted the peas and they are already sprouting. Can't wait to pick them!

I like ripe peas but I prefer them to be sweeter on top of the mealy taste.

You can't beat Kelvedon Wonder for reliable flavour - small or mature -  and I reserve the dried peas' plants for producing tender pea shoots for salads.

Snap peas are good too - between these and KW you've got all the fresh bases covered - why bother growing for the freezer?? if you want mealy peas for stews then dried peas are dirt cheap and taste better than canned.

The great thing about bought peas is that they throw the pod away - and that's where 95%+ of the pesticide goes with it.
