Modules of brassica plants

When I buy the module trays of brassicas (12) they have good roots and the plants lift easily out with the little cube of compost attached.  However when I grow my own I do not seem to get the same effect and they are difficult to remove from the tray and the compost scatters all over the place.

Can anyone suggest what I am going wrong?

Same trays reused, best quality multipurpose compost.

I wonder if you firm the compost enough to clump it up. Also..if you are able to grow on the seedling slow in cooler condition..they make more root growth without tops getting too much ahead.

We grow ours in toilet rolls. Just plant the whole thing without disturbing the root system.

Are you using a decent seed compost?  I used a different compost about 3 years back and had dismal effects, learnt my lesson and went back to a decent compost - Singletons.

I was so fed up with cheapo stuff I got a bag from a horticultural suppliers.

Maybe I am not firming it down enough.  I will give that a try.

I really do not think there has been too much overheating going on.
