Hello all.

My new asparagus has come through and although currently at various heights, they are very thin. The tallest at around 4 inches can only be about a tenth of an inch in diameter. Is this usual for the first year or have I done something wrong. I spent a lot of time in preparing the bed including sieving the soil and ensuring there was a bed of compost for the crowns to be put on.

Can i do anything to improve for next year when I hope to be harvesting?

As always I look forward to your replies.

Regards

They are young so just leave them to get on and grow. You will get some bigger and smaller to start off with but in a couple of years they will be ready to pick..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... (over 10 ton per acre)    2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..      see my web blog at...  http://www.gavinconway.net

From my little experience, I would say that was normal.
As your shoots are only 4 inches tall, it is quite early and you may get more shoots that may be thicker but don't worry if you don't.

It's what is happening underground that is important, as they will be growing large spreading roots.

If there's nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe!
