Is it too late to start sowing onion seed.

No it is not..provided you get them going ASAP. I sowed mine only couple of weeks ago and as the weather and soil has been as cold as it has been...not much to gain from earlier sowing unless able to grow them under covers. I'm not expecting huge show size onions but just ordinary 'use in one go' size bulbs.
My seedlings are now up and ready for pricking out and planted into modules and to be grown in those for few more weeks before transplanted out. I did give little heat for the seed trays to get the seeds going...placed the trays in heated propagator during night and kept them in 'normal' room temp during day.
I suspect that those who has been late with their onion seeds will benefit from it..perharps their seedlings will escape from early bolting that too much cold too early in growing season will cause.
