Hi, this is my first post so please forgive me if i make any fubars! I have recently developed an interest in horticulture through voluntary work at a local social enterprise. I absolutely love it and have now approached my local council in an attempt to secure my own plot. I asked to be put on the list where I am currently volunteering as there is an allotment plot on the same patch of land. I was told there was a waiting list of 40 people, and surprise, surprise I was number 40! Volunteering here I have seen the state of the allotments that have been going to seed and now appear unusable without a lot of work, and at least 12 months before anything could be grown. I was just wondering if there is any law or regulation that must be followed by the council that runs the allotment in regards to maintaining the land that is not given to the care of tenants, as I would love to give the council the kick up the proverbial they deserve to get people growing their own produce. Cheers to anyone that can help!!

Welcome Coren!!  Not really much I can do by way of an answer to the legality but maybe taking some pics of all the vacant plots and sending them to the council would help.  Unfortuantely some councils really don't care about actively managing allotment sites and are quite happy to see them go to ruin - then they can be sold off!!!

Best of luck to you!
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Welcome coren

It seems most allotments are self managed , i have just taken on the role of sec on our site and have been shocked at the state that a couple of previous tenents have left their plots in -- as luck would have it just as i took on the role we have a number of new people on the site who are willing to help with a massive clear up which will take at least 6 months the downside to this is that i have agreed to not charge them rent this year because the plots will be unworkable till next spring due to the amount of buried carpets etc .

Good luck with your quest for your own plot i hope you gain one soon .
