Hello

I have not ordered my seeds yet as I am trying to find the best tasting butterhead lettuce variety. I have chosen a nice cos and I am looking for a large headed butter heat that has good flavour. I did a variety called Fatima that was a organic variety a few years ago and I cannot find that anywhere now so I am having to look for another variety. Does anyone have any suggestions other than little gem and the like :)

Thanks  :blob7:

Easily obtainable ones would say 4 Seasons, , and not to forget Tom Thumb and Deer Tongue which I grow all year round. Sangria if you want a red one.

I would put in a bid for Black Seeded Simpson which is a looseleaf too though but a lovely flavour.

I liked Sylvesta for which we had seeds from the Seed Circle a few years ago.  The Organic Catalogue stocks it.  Does last a very long time before bolting - the leaves are quite thick and robust.

Definitely agree with Jeannine about Marvel of 4 seasons or quattro stagioni, which has slightly more crispy leaves.  Looks very pretty and is available from several sources.

JEANNINE, how do you grow Deer Tongue all year round in your area?
The handle on your recliner does not qualify as an exercise machine.

I have a tum it is actually the double sized botom of a freezer, the salad drawer actually, I have quite a few of them. I grew many salad leaves in them over the winter, inside and under lights along th full sized minin lasttuce radish and green onions It works really well especially for mixed salad greens that are up iun no time

The_snail - exactly the same question I've been asking myself! So thanks from me too for all for suggestions.

I've just tried Winter Marvel for over winter salad in a cold greenhouse and did pretty well - buttery leaves, unfortunately not many, but quite open so didn't suffer from fluffy mould.

"Black Seeded Simpson" and "Marvel of 4 Seasons" never let me down, I  do grow lots of others but these two are my favourits
