Bit new to asparagus.  When do you cut off the tops for the winter?  They still seem to be very green even though we have had some quite heavy frosts.

small

I leave mine till they have gone through the orange/yellow stage and are drying off. For me, that was yesterday, but my bed starts very early so I stop cutting early.

same as small. I wait until all the goodness has gone back into the crown, then cut them back

Rather surprisingly mine is still very green and lush.  It is a toss up whether to cut before the goodness has been retrieved, or the wind loosens the plant and allowing frost etc into the roots.

Mine are also green. They were later to start than anyone else's.  I plan to wait until they are brown. After all with so much top it must give some frost protection!!???

green lily

I cut mine off about a month ago when they were just yellowing. They were shading the onions which were beginning to lean sideways so I chopped it all back over a couple of days. Think they'll be ok. I weeded them and gave then a goodnight cuppa of seaweed meal... :drunken_smilie: then covered them up against cats and left them to sleep... :sleepy2:
