My order from Marshalls arrived yesterday. I got my favourite Albigensian Wight but I'm very disappointed the cloves are half the size and I'm guessing only the outer cloves are going to be any good for planting so not very many plants. The provence wight ordered at the same time are twice the size more like the normal size of the Albigensian wight.

Can't really comment on your garlic..but some of my garlic varieties have not grown as big this year as they normally do or I would expect them..so I suspect same would apply many other growers too..commercial or not.
Its been 'funny' old year many crops have not grown 'normally'.

I usually save some of mine and replant but this year they are quite titchy so can't make up my mind whether to start again with fresh stock or not.

I received my garlic bulbs too this week from two different suppliers. I had some Solent wight  and early purple wight from DT Brown and some Tuscany wight, Provence wight and chesnok wight from Kings seeds.  I have had to complain to both of these companies as the quality of the Provence wight and Solent wight garlic bulbs that they sent were in very poor condition - soft, pappy and mouldy!

they just arrived and the bulbs are good, tbh I am so glad I didn`t purchase from some of the suppliers who sent me dodgy bulbs in the past.

I am into my 3rd year with jolimont

It`s a very nice garlic and got rust this year but the bulbs look good and I intend to carry on with it this year, even though some of the dry papery cover was red/white stripey. Nothing ventured

I've also had to complain as garlic arrived with one clove rotten from DT Brown and one other very small, it was a special offer with the Kicthen Garden magazine but very poor quality. I'm waiting for a reply currently.... disappointing as want to start planting.

Florence, my order was also a special offer from Kitchen Garden and I called them on the same day and explained about the poor quality of one of the bulbs.  I expected to return the faulty bulb and receive the same as a replacement but the lady who I spoke to said that they are a special offer and are only sold in multiples of three and a new batch of would be sent back out to me ASAP.

I would try ringing them and see what they say.

I also called Kings to complain about the quality of the Provence wight and he said that lots of customers have complained about the quality of their orders and they blame their suppliers from the Isle of wight.  I should be receiving the replacement bulb in the post as well.  Looks like I will have more garlic than I know what to do with!

if you want to try a new variety, the really garlicky company (scotland) has their garlic sold in waitrose, a hardneck Porcelain variety called 'Music'. I've just found out that it's from where their seed garlic is from - [url]http://www.facebook.com/pages/Really-Garlicky-Company/103686599677686?fref=ts/url]

it's cheaper than buying direct from any other company.

ps. sorry, can't seem to get the hang of setting up links!

Yes I should complain too. Its not cheap and it looks like only about 6 cloves on each of the two bulbs are even slighty suitable for planting.
I know my garlic was small this year but i'm not trying to sell it either.

Mine has arrived from the Isle of Wight company - 3 different varieties. I've cleared a bed of lightish soil. Should I dig garden compost in before I plant? I have plenty. Or will it make too much leaf before the winter?

Robert_Brenchley

I mulch with grass cuttings or autumn leaves; compost would do just as well. The worms take it down, so there's no need to dig it in.

Got my Music garlic today from Waitrose and if it stops raining, I Will try and get it planted this week.
