Go to Morrisons most days for my shopping as I can walk there.  Last night looked at the price for a small container of gooseberries £2.  The same for redcurrants and blackcurrants.  Cheered me up as I have made goosegog crumble and goosegog chutney, tastes good, but said to leave it for 4 - 6 weeks.  Also made redcurrant jelly and added some redcurrants to raspberry/strawberry jam to help it set.  Have redcurrants in the freezer, and blackcurrants to pick soon. Still have gooseberries on the bush to ripen, only one bush and so far at least £6 saved. It all goes towards to increased rent this year, but must have spent loads on slug pellets, but apart from that (and a few packets/actually loads of seeds) haven't spent anything this year.  Must buy a pair of ladies shears that work, can't seem to get mine sharpened and they are too heavy.

Know what you mean about  the prices of fruit in the supermarkets.

We are still working on our lotty. Not had it long and it was a jungle >:(

We have the fruit bushes in tubs ready to go in in the Autumn when the  ground should be ready. SPuds in at the moment breaking the ground up a bit.

We get up early and go to Spitalfields about once a fortnight and get trays and boxes of fruit which we split with friends, you would not believe the prices.

About half to a third of the price. Large trays of peaches and nectarines £3 to £3.30.

You could try it it isn't far. We do Billingsgate on the same day. Brilliant fresh fish at half the price of the supermarket.

what times are best to go to the markets? my daughter lives in london, but she doesn't really use the markets (doesn't like to travel far) but goes to the one in camden (closes to her)

we have loads of loch ness blackberries ripened and easy picking too, saw them in a supermarket the other day, £2 for a small flat tray. A nice feeling

The price of fruit is so high in the shops but the one that always amazes me is the price of rhubarb as it's so easy to grow   :o

I`m off Whimberry picking on Saturday. Loads up the mountain behind me and this year I have one of those berry pickers which I bought from Lakeland only £7.00 they are nearly £12.00 in the gardening catalogues. So hopefully a tart of Sunday and loads of home made wine

Ahh we call them bilberries!  when I was younger the roads into the peak district would be lined with cars when folks came out of Sheffield to pick them. Now no-one bothers! Hope you get loads.

Sorry missed your question.

We get to the market at about 5am. Traders go much earlier but this time suits us.
Not that keen about getting up earlier than 4 am.
Quite quick to get there without all the traffic on the roads.

YOu do need to take cash with you. ;)
