Knobbly Courgettes

One of my courgette plants has in the last week started producing knobbly courgettes.

It has been going for a couple of months without doing this, and all of the others seem to be going OK still.

Anyone any idea what might be causing the problem?

I've found a few discussions on various forums, but no-one seems to have an actual answer, just speculation about lack of nutrients or a virus, or even too much of some element.

The courgettes themselves seem to be perfectly edible still.

They could have been crossed with a knobbly variety of courgette. often the fruits are not so knobbly in the beginning of the season  and the knobbliesness gets more noticeable if the fruit are allowed to grow bigger.

Could be a reaction to insect damage or chemical spray.

Sounds like cucumber mosaic virus.  Stunted, knobbly fruits and mottled leaves.  Perfectly edible, however the virus can spread to other plants.

My leaves are all ok but we did get a dimply courgette. Probably something to do with the weather
