My shallots are the size of my fist.... as I grow them to pickle I'll need some enormous jars.... does anyone have any?

THey'd need to be bigger than that... these shallots are bigger than most of my onions.....

Mine where huge last year I was a bit disappointed at the size. Like you say bigger than some of the onions. I had some big Kilner jars but only three would fit in. They didn't exactly fit on the cocktail stick with the little cubes of cheese. Threw most of them away early this year. Some of my onions this year are the size that shallots should be so I might pickle them this year.

Lidl sell whole gherkins in big jars..but you would have to munch the lot first before using them for onion.. ::)

Can I ask what variety of shallots you grew?  I've not had much luck with mine this year and am looking for a reliable variety to grow next year.  I saw someone grow banana shallots from seed and they were a huge success.  I plan on growing these next year but also want to grow some sets.

Banana from seed.... last year they were a germination disaster (one of several) but this year they did OK (not great) and from memory I planted them out from 40-cell modules, I'd probably put 3 or 4 seeds in each, but there were a lot of modules with only 1 or 2 (or 0) seedlings in. I plant on harvesting in about 10 days time... hopefully get them up onto a drying frame at home, or possibly in my shelter tunnel on the plot (polytunnel with netting lower sides).

Perhaps just use them for cooking and grow a smaller variety next year?
