Seed testing

I was wondering if anyone has saved seed and tried that out the same year as a test for sowing the following year (if that makes sense). I was given some pepper (padron) plants, put them in the polytunnel in March and they've been excellent. I've saved some seed for next year but to see if they germinate ok etc thought it might be worth sowing 2 or 3 now? Does that sound like a plan...or maybe a waste of time and compost?

Yes..you can do that and it is often done with many other 'things' to test viability of seeds..I don't think it is waste of seed and compost and you can over winter the plants if you want for to grow early peppers next year.. ;) ;D

BTW..I couldn't wait to trial some of those chilli seeds you sent..I've got some couple of inch tall plants that I'm aiming to over winter as they won't be able to fruit this year anymore.  ;D..all doing well and germination was good.. ;)
Oh...and..Piquillo de Lodosa is fruiting..loads of small green fruit set on.. ;D

Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.

I have those chillis in the polytunnel, fruiting nicely and about 8cm long - be interesting to see what they come out like. The Piquillo de Lodosa did well for me last year, they are quite small and triangular so don't be surprised at the size - it's not your compost  ;)

I have certainly done it with beans, before I send them to other people.  Grew beans for HSL and certainly tested them before I posted.  If beans are not thoroughly dried before depodding they can go mouldy.
