Tomatillo - anyone else failing dismally?

I planted some tomatillo seeds from Chiltern, sowed under vermiculite, in bag in airing cupboard. Nothing. Not a jot. Tomatoes sowed at the same time ready to go into the cold frame.

Anyone else failed as dismally? I might add I have the same problem with celeriac - just can't get it to germinate. Makes parsnips look like weeds!

I don't sow tomatillo anymore. I just wait for them to pop up in my home-made compost, which they invariably do. They only come up though once it gets seriously warm, so they are lagging a long way behind the tomatoes. I would have thought an airing cupboard would be plenty warm enough but maybe they need light?

I've had very good germination with all my tomato varieties - with the exception of Sungold and the tomatillos - which were all sown at the same time. The tomatoes are strong, healthy and vigorous but the Sungold seeds produced just one seedling which doesn't want to grow and the tomatillos were a dead loss. Not to worry - I'm still trying to use up last year's tomatoes and will have fewer plants this year. Shame about the tomatillos, I would have liked to try them.

I've not had any pop up yet despite having them in the warm.
Love them so sad!

Mine came up a treat, I think they like warm temperatures to get them going. But the same as Winecap I've had volunteers in previous years, though a bit later than this so perhaps they don't need it so warm as all that. Previously I have had to make a second sowing as they didn't germinate, though it didn't appear to be for any apparent reason?

There is still time to sow some, you could try sowing some on damp kitchen paper placed in a plastic tub or inside a plastic bag and see how they get on. That would rule out iffy compost. I can send you some of the seed I've sown (a mix of varieties) if you want to try a different source of seeds in case it is them? Pm me your address if you do.

Oh dear, were they from the seed circle ones?

Check your PMs, Jayb!

Mine were from Chiltern Seeds, so I wouldn't expect them to be duff - I'll give chitting them a go, and also try them in the light, if there's still time. Just fancied trying something different.

I sowed mine in March and they spent ages looking frail and spindly, but they are now happily flowering in the greenhouse - also from Chiltern as I couldn't find where I'd stashed the seed circle seeds at the time. Might sow a couple of your seeds now Jayb as you say there's still time and they look really interesting! (as does everything in that parcel!)

Yes, but you never know some might pop up in the greenhouse where I had them last year!  :toothy10:

Do you want some more seeds?
Lol, they do have a habit of sowing themselves!

They are looking good Sparrow, are you going to be growing them inside or out?

Well, mine from Jayb (thank you!) arrived on Friday, and went onto damp kitchen roll in a little tray on Saturday, along with a few more of Chiltern's.

We shall see...

Three roots thus far in the ones from Jayb, nothing from Chiltern's. I'm surprised if they've sold me duff seed - apart from turnips, where frankly it's my dodgy watering that's the problem, I don't recall having much trouble previously.

Now I just need to pot them up before ugberring off for a long weekend... looking at houses... dealing with excess cucumber seedlings...  :help:

Nice one  :icon_cheers:

Mine from Jayb (via the seed circle from memory) came up a treat.  Started in the propagator like tomatoes and now flowering and have been planted in the greenhouse.   :sunny:

Self-seeding does not seem very common here, would be neat to have them come up in the greenhouse again.  I had coriander pop up though.

Thanks but they have germinated now, and got at least one self seeded :toothy10:
